Trees in Trouble-Sudden Oak Death...On the Move

Lesson:

Activity Description: 

Students will observe and discuss photos and information sheets on symptoms of SOD and how the pathogen spreads.  A hands-on activity demonstrating how soil is moved on shoes follows, and is wrapped up with a discussion on sanitizing practices. 

Objective: 

The activity will demonstrate how humans can unknowingly assist in moving the pathogen to unaffected areas and how we can help stop this spread.

Pre-Activity Prep: 

Visit the California Oak Mortality Task Force website (http://www.suddenoakdeath.org) for more information about SOD and Phytophthora ramorum, as well as to obtain photographs and pamphlets to use in the following activities.
